Toward a circular economy

Towards a circular economy

The problem: the linear model
The traditional, linear model of take-make-dispose has had a dramatic impact on our environment. In this type of economy, large quantities of waste are generated, and the full potential of the resources used are not fully realized.

The solution: circularity
Transitioning toward a more sustainable, circular economy will redefine growth, enhancing the flow of goods and services. A circular economy aims at eliminating the production of pollution and waste, instead focussing on the continual use of resources. A circular economy is one that is both restorative and regenerative.

Designed to last

High-quality, long-lasting dispenser systems have been synonymous with the OPHARDT Hygiene brand since the beginning. Our flagship ingo-man® dispenser was first crafted in 1967, with a robust design meant to withstand reprocessing requirements in medical institutions. Many of our first ingo-man® dispensers are still in operation today, decades after their initial installation. With our SanTRAL® Series, our team has set the benchmark for public washroom dispensing, built to withstand the wear and tear of frequent use in the public sector. Our long-product life-cycles are an aspect of our designs we are proud of, supporting us in our mission to 'break the chain of infection'.

Euro Bottle Open System

Open format Euro bottle

In 1973 OPHARDT introduced the Euro bottle concept into German hospitals, a standard bottle type that ensures bottles from different manufacturers are compatible with the same dispenser system. The introduction of this standard means that hospitals and clinics are not tied to a specific manufacturer, and instead have the flexibility to switch between suppliers. Today, many countries surrounding Germany have also fully adopted the Euro Bottle standard. Other countries, as far away as Russia and Brazil, are hybrid markets that also use Euro Bottles. The open, Euro bottle concept provides a flexible and secure supply, especially relevant during pandemics where bottlenecks in supply can have a critical impact on healthcare workers' ability to safely treat patients.

Backwards compatibility

Don't discard a good dispenser, upgrade it. Electronic hand hygiene monitoring and instant feedback is a growing tool used in medical facilities to increase hand hygiene compliance long-term. To support improved hand hygiene compliance and infection prevention, our team has designed a smart, retrofittable module, that can be installed in seconds into existing ingo-man® plus dispensers. Installing this module extends the life of the dispenser, while ensuring hygiene professionals have access to vital hand hygiene compliance data.

Made for Recycling

An integral component of circular design involves reducing waste and closing material loops. Considering end-of-life options in the product-design phase can help facilitate more sustainable solutions. Recycling, as an end-of-life option, can extend the value of the resources we do consume, keeping them in material loops longer. In some environments, legal frameworks require us to use single-use packaging. To evaluate those products, we use third-party assessments focused on each stage, including collection, sorting, and recycling. Packaging that achieves a high grade of recyclability supports a more sustainable, circular economy.

Post-consumer recycled plastics

Post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins are made from plastics that have completed their product life-cycle and have been recycled into new resins. PCR materials generally have a lower environmental impact than primary materials. Our in-house team of designers and engineers are constantly evaluating more sustainable materials to incorporate into our products. To date, we've successfully integrated PCR resins into some of our flagship products and continue to test the applicability across our product range.

Sustainable operations

When it comes to sustainability, we consider more than just our products. We take into account the impact of our operations, seeking to reduce resource consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Each year, we publish a sustainability report that describes all of our activities and initiatives as they relate to our efforts to improve health and well-being, cultivate stronger communities, and foster a thriving environment.
