INFECTION PREVENTION

Clean hands, save lives.

Infection prevention

Hand hygiene saves lives.

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are an onerous problem for health care systems all over the world.  Each year, more than 2,600,000 HAIs arise during hospital stays in Europe , and approximately 1,700,000 HAIs are documented in the United States.

Healthcare-associated infections can lead to complications during hospital treatment, and in some cases, complications arising from HAIs can lead to patient death.  Patients in intensive care units, especially, are at higher risk to develop infections. The use of antibiotics to treat HAIs may prove ineffective if multi-resistant pathogens are induced.

Hand hygiene compliance in medical facilities.

Against this backdrop, effective measures are required to prevent infections in healthcare settings.

According to the World Health Organization, hand hygiene is the most important “weapon” to avoid the transmission of harmful pathogens and prevent healthcare-associated infections.

While health care workers can significantly contribute to the fight against healthcare-associated infections and help avoid antibiotic resistance by disinfecting their hands at the right times, implementing effective hand hygiene practices can prove challenging. Compliance with the recommendations for hand washing and hand disinfection is often low; compliance rates typically equate to 40% or less. Causes for poor hand hygiene behaviour in clinical practice are multi-faceted and complex.

Multi-modal strategies for improvements in hand hygiene.

National and international guidelines on hand hygiene in medical settings recommend implementing multimodal strategies to increase hand hygiene compliance. Components of these strategies range from essential elements, such as increased availability of hand hygiene products, to techniques that address behavioural psychology.

With more than 50 years of expertise in the field of medical hand hygiene, OPHARDT hygiene supports health care workers achieve sustained improvements in hand hygiene compliance through scientific-oriented system solutions. We contribute to Breaking the chain of infection and reducing the need for antibiotics through effective hand cleaning and disinfection.

Hygiene Compliance Solutions to Improve Infection Prevention

The Hygiene Compliance Solutions concept supports medical facilities in achieving hygiene goals by increasing hand hygiene compliance. Based on international guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and national recommendations from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), as well as the German Society for Hospital Hygiene (DGKH), Hygiene Compliance Solutions is a practical solution for improving hand hygiene compliance and secure patient safety, developed by OPHARDT hygiene.

The concept has three major components:

Promoting hand hygiene

High quality products are an important prerequisite for sustainaed improvements in hand hygiene. We offer our dispensers with a five-year-warranty and demonstrate our products.

Dependable touchless dispensing systems have been shown to increase hand hygiene compliance and simplifies integration into daily practice. Researchers have observed that touch free operated dispensers can increase disinfectant usage from 34 ml per patient day to 52 ml per patient day (an increase of 53%).

Dispensers with high-vis colours also increase attention to hand hygiene products, encouraging healthcare workers to disinfectant their hands.
